Cavitation in rubber: an elastic instability or a fracture phenomenon?

چکیده

It is by now well established that loading conditions with suffi ciently large triaxialities can induce the suddenappearance of internal cavities within elastomeric (and other soft) solids. The occurrence of such a phenome-non, commonly referred to as cavitation, can be attributed to the growth of pre-existing defects into fi nite sizes. In the fi rst part of this discussion, I will present a new theory within the context of nonlinear elasticity to study thephenomenon of cavitation in rubber that contrary to earlier approaches: (i) allows to consider general 3D loadingconditions with arbitrary triaxiality; (ii) applies to general classes of nonlinear elastic solids; and (iii) incorporatesdirect information on the initial shape, spatial distribution, and mechanical properties of the underlying defects atwhich cavitation can initiate. The basic idea is to fi rst cast cavitation in elastomeric solids as the homogenizationproblem of nonlinear elastic materials containing random distributions of zero-volume cavities, or defects. Then, bymeans of a novel iterated homogenization procedure, exact solutions are constructed for such a problem. Theseinclude solutions for the change in size of the underlying cavities as a function of the applied loading conditions, from which the onset of cavitation – corresponding to the event when the initially infi nitesimal cavities suddenlygrow into fi nite sizes – can be readily determined. In the second part of the discussion, I will confront the theorywith a variety of cavitation experiments with the objective of establishing whether the phenomenon of cavitationis an elastic instability (and hence depends only on the elastic properties of the rubber), or, on the other hand, afracture process (and hence depends on the fracture properties of the rubber). Cavitation in rubber: an elastic instability or a fracture phenomenon?

The viewpoint that cavitation in rubber— that is, the sudden growth of inherent defects in rubber into large enclosed cavities in response to external stimuli—is a purely elastic phenomenon has long been known to be fundamentally incomplete. Essentially, this is because the local stretches around the defects at which cavitation initiates far exceed the elastic limit of the rubber, which therefo...

Some Remarks on the Effects of Inertia and Viscous Dissipation in the Onset of Cavitation in Rubber

Through direct comparisons with experiments, Lefèvre et al. (Int. J. Frac. 192:1– 23, 2015) have recently confirmed the prevailing belief that the nonlinear elastic properties of rubber play a significant role in the so-called phenomenon of cavitation—that is, the sudden growth of inherent defects in rubber into large enclosed cavities/cracks in response to external stimuli. These comparisons h...

Fracture behaviour of unmodified and rubber-modified epoxies under hydrostatic pressure

The fracture toughness and uniaxial tensile yield strengths of unmodified and CTBN-rubbermodified epoxies were measured under hydrostatic pressure. The purpose of these experiments was to learn how suppressing cavitation in rubber particles affects the deformation mechanisms and the fracture toughness of rubber-modified epoxy. It was found that the cavitation of CTBN-rubber could be suppressed ...

Effects of Rate on Crack Growth in a Rubber-Modified Epoxy

The rate-dependent fracture behavior of a 10-phr rubber-modified epoxy was investigated using double-cantilever-beam tests at various crosshead speeds. Dramatic rate effects were observed in the R-curve behavior and in the relationship between the applied energy-release rate and the crack velocity. Furthermore, a transition between fracture with toughening mechanisms operating (kinetic crack gr...

Cavitation instabilities in plastics and rubber-modified plastics

Spherical void expansion in plastics and rubber-modified plastics is investigated under radial traction conditions. The plastics are modeled as elastic-plastic pressure-sensitive materials and the rubbers are modeled as nonlinearly elastic materials. First, the growth of a spherical void in an infinite plastic matrix is investigated under remote radial traction conditions. The results show that...
